Cover photo: On January 3, 1972, Rick Sylvester skied off the top of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. When he soared into space, he was going so fast that he did a backflip when he hit the air. He free-fell for 1,500 feet before releasing his skis and opening his parachute. As a result, he landed in a tree at the base of El Capitan instead of maneuvering for a landing in a meadow. Sylvester trained for the vent by making 54 sky dives, even making a free fall from a plane with skis. Photo: by Ed Cooper; Illustration by S. Sansonetti.
