On the cover: Herb Conn doing repair work on Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in 1971. Inside Summit Journal 323 is a feature profile of Herb and his wife, Jan, prolific early contributors to Summit Magazine and the archetypal dirtbag climbers. In the 1940s and 1950s, they lived out of their truck and in a tiny cave in the Black Hills, and developed hundreds of routes across the U.S. — decades before #vanlife was a thing.
