The Reach Out Children's Fund
Reach Out Children's Fund was founded to assist the children of Huilloc
School #50627 and the surrounding schools in the Andes Mountain Range
in Peru.
Huilloc School has approximately 250 students ranging in ages of 3 to
17 years old. The students are Quechua Indians, direct descendants of
the Inca Indians. They speak Quechua while learning Spanish in school.
The village is above the tree line, which makes it difficult to grow
food and stay warm during the winter months. The drinking source is
shared with the local animals from a mountain stream. The children
rarely see a doctor and have yet been visited by a dentist.
But in October, 2007, that all changed. ROCF, came to visit the
surrounding area, and brought their medical volunteers – a team which
consisted of two doctors, one nurse, and a dentist! The dentist is from
Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru, and his name is Juan Carlos Leroma Villa.
On this trip, they visited the six villages of Huilloc, Yanamayo,
Quelcanca, Chaullacocha and Chupani. Sadly, extreme mountain terrain,
and an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level, make for a harsh
environment for the villages of Chaullacocha and Chupani. The children
in Chaullacocha do not have running water, electricity, or bathrooms.
The pre-school room is a mud hut with a straw roof. There is a small
window with a rock blocking the wind. During all of his visits, the
dentist was able to make temporary fillings along with other dental
procedures. Here’s his report from his visit to Chaullacocha :
A total of 38 patients were seen, 21 of them were children.
44 teeth, in total, were worked on.
14 of the children had infections and had to have one or more teeth
extracted.
The clinic provides a free toothbrush, toothpaste, and brushing
instructions to all of the children.
Dr. Juan Carlos says: “I made many extractions in this community
(necessary extractions because they presented infections) and that is
not good for the children because but it advances they will have
serious problems, that indicated in these children is the sellantes
application, this it is a material to place in the healthy teeth and
with this it is prevented the infections in the teeth, besides always
carrying out the permanent fluorization.” A partner of The Mountain
Fund, Reach Out Children’s Fund is a small organization of dedicated
volunteers. There are currently no salaries or high administration
costs associated with our organization. We aim for all monies received
to be given directly to the village of Huilloc for the on-going
projects as well as future projects. Each dollar given has a direct
effect on this unique community.
