The Keen Newport H2
tests the Newport H2 sandals in the Exumas, Bahamas. The Newport H2 is the foundation of the Keen Footwear line. Designed to perform in adverse conditions, the Newport H2's razor stripped outsole and 3mm lugs provide excellent traction. Synthetic uppers
Finally it has arrived: high performance warm weather amphibious footwear that can take some abuse, and is multi-purpose. Keen provided me with a pair of Newport H2's, during which time I was immersed in the Exumas, Bahamas partaking in a number of exploration activities. Most importantly, these sandals are comfortable. The soles are contoured to fit the natural curvatures of your foot quite nicely. This also contributes to some stability. I spent several 8+ hour days on my feet, hiking through the brush, on and off of boats, walking the karstified Bahamian shoreline, all without a cramp or a blister. The toe protection is key for working around docks and hopping on and off of boats in a fast paced environment. No more worries about stubbing toes, splinters, or getting caught up on boat cleats. I have even jogged short distances and made several fast paced hikes through rugged terrain with no problems. The H2's are well vented, keeping your feet cool in the heat, and I never hesitated to hop on in the water to walk over areas of coral, or to tromp through the mangroves. The H2's are the perfect balance of performance and protection for those that anticipate variable moisture conditions throughout the day. They are also fast drying, which paid off, as they doubled well with a nice pair of jeans for a night out. I have worn this same pair now for more than 300 consecutive days. My only critical comment is on the anti-odor technology. The H2's do wash well, but after these 300 some days, we'll leave that to your imagination. In short, I will never be found in the field without a pair, and for the water-bound explorer, these are a must have.
